The Australian Merino Production Trial (AMPT) is Australia's leading independent sheep benchmarking project, providing Merino producers with trusted data to improve breeding, management and profitability.
By evaluating genetics under commercial production systems, the AMPT measures key traits including wool quality, growth, carcase performance and eating quality.
Bringing together producers, researchers and industry leaders from across Australia, the trial delivers practical insights that drive informed decision-making, accelerate genetic progress and strengthen the future of the Australian sheep industry.
The AMPT is a research initiative dedicated to benchmarking the profitability drivers within sheep enterprises.
A central focus for the 2025-2027 trial will focus on evaluating wool attributes and the commercial carcass of randomly sampled 2024 drop wether lambs.

Greendale Merinos has come out on top in the AMPT trial - out of 74 entrant teams for Total Sheep Value per $ DSE.

Results highlight Greendale genetics as the most profitable genetic source in the AMPT trial
The range in Total Sheep Value (TSV) per DSE is $137.36 to $180.57 = 31% difference in profitability.
Spring-drop cohort across the two trial sites showed considerable differences in wool production, fleece value, carcase value and overall sheep value between bloodlines - Source AMPT 2026 Wool Report Summary -
AMPT teams were adjusted for site & age group and ranked together, TSV ranged from $170.39-$229.94 per head (a 35% difference between the highest and lowest performing genetics.

- Mid side sample - 4 weeks prior to shearing
-Data capture pre & during shearing included micron, yield, staple length, GFW, pieces, belly weights, an AWEX identification and bin line.
- 5 year rolling average price (for wool & mutton)
Age groups & birth season - due to the variation in age between teams the first years shearing results are presented in birth season.
The reason being 80% of variation can be associated with early life influences.
In 2027 all teams will be reported together for their adult stage.
A key metric to focus on is Total Sheep Value / Dry Sheep Equivalent (TSV DSE)
this provides indication of efficiency that can be compared across environments & stocking rates
